Also, why a search width size of 27 characters? Jakob Nielsen explains in his Top Ten Guidelines for Homepage Usability article, in his fifth guideline "Include a Search Input Box" that based on his findings in his "Web Usability 2004 project", he recommends making the search box 27 characters wide."
